Learn science, not how to crack exams or pass grades
Scientific acumen is developed through real thinking and experimentation, not just by following procedures or preparing for examinations. When the wrong thing (exams) is overemphasized, the right thing (learning) gets neglected
Lectures on science isn't the same as learning science
Learning is most successful when it is self-directed and experiential. There is little place for such approaches in our current education system. It’s not the teachers who are at fault. They too are constrained by a curriculum. A science curriculum is useful, but not necessary to learn or be excited by science.
Institutions lack capacity
This could be a lack of scientific instruments, physical space, or safety equipment. Equally, educators are not trained in delivering high-quality science education. Sometimes, there is capacity in one area, say equipment, but this is rendered useless because of a lack of capacity in another area, say faculty.
Cuurricular education is killing student interest
When science is taught badly, this not only turns students off of science but it also blocks the path to careers in science. Moreover, a lack of proper understanding of science subjects has an outsize impact in other related domains such as engineering and medicine.
The country is suffering
A lack of progress in science has massive implications in terms of the country’s progress. While there are pockets of excellence, the overall standard is well below par. The country has no university ranked in the top 100 internationally.
Competition, not collaboration
The current education system prioritizes competition over collaboration when the world scientific community has already understood that scientific breakthroughs are collaborative efforts. The obsession with competition in the country has resulted in the lack of a culture of teamwork.
